Computer games classification
The Commonwealth does not support the introduction of an R18+ classification
for computer games.
The Commonwealth has previously expressed concern about the potential
for young people to obtain access to R18+ interactive material.
The likelihood of children obtaining access increases if the material
is legally available.
In 1994 Ministers set the highest classification for computer games
as MA15+ due to concerns about their ‘interactive’ nature and the
impact and potential harm on children. That decision was made at
a time when there was limited research about the effects of computer
games. Although there is now more research about the effects of
interactivity, it is complex and inconclusive.
The issue has arisen in the context of the Review of the Classification
Guidelines for Films and Computer Games being undertaken by the
Office of Film and Literature Classification at the request of Commonwealth,
State and Territory Censorship Ministers.
All Censorship Ministers must agree to any changes to the guidelines.
Censorship Minsters will further consider this matter at their next
meeting in November.
