Sammy, a school bus, and his friends - a double-decker bus, a country bus, and a number of city buses - each have their own routes for which they are responsible. They spend their days driving passengers around the streets of Chumley and in the evening they all come together to sleep in a depot, watched over by Mr. Spector the bus inspector.
In one episode Sammy shows a repeated lack of empathy for his fellow buses. They have been given the wrong type of fuel and spend the day backfiring all over town, some are confused, some are embarrassed and after a near crash one drives into a duck pond. Sammy takes obvious delight in the discomfort of his friends and laughs each time someone backfires.
