Synopsis

Join Annika and Brietta while they search for the magical Wand of Light to break the evil wizard, Wenlock’s spell over the kingdom.  Games and activities abound in this adventure quest.

Points to consider

Words of caution

  • The final duel between Annika and the wizard is conducted by magic.  Although mild, Annika can be thrown backwards if she does not defend herself in time.
  • Barbie's body shape and the clothing she wears promote an unrealistic emphasis on body image and promote early sexualisation

Positive aspects

Encourages:

  • object recognition
  • pattern matching
  • problem solving

Questions to ask

Given it is not possible to use magic, parents might like to ask for alternative non-violent endings, e.g.

  • “How else do you think he/she could have solved that problem (ie. broken the spell)?”
  • “Can we use magic in real life?”
  • “Can we always get what we wish for?  Why not?”

With regard to the concept that Barbie may promote early sexualization and unreal body image, parents may wish to discuss their own and their child’s views regarding the doll.  If the attraction to the doll is the beauty she portrays, discuss the concept of beauty, reassure your child of their own beauty, and work out ways of providing other female role models that you regard to be less sexually provocative in nature.
